Shirlene Tibbetts was what we called a plain, good ole gal and everybody in town just loved her to pieces. When she was young, she adopted Will Rogers' adage about never meeting a man she didn't like. She said she was like silly putty in their hands. She liked every man that is, except her brother Richard, who was a crook and a liar and- well that's trying to put it nicely -since he spent most of his life down in McAlester behind bars.

Shirlene loved telling jokes but could never remember any of the punch lines. She told the funniest story I ever heard about feeding Richard a catshit sandwich once when they were kids. That was, of course, before she found religion. She saw the light one night at Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, where her ole granddaddy had lost his false teeth under a booth and was so drunk he didn't even notice it until he tried to eat a chicken fried steak the next day.

Every Friday and Saturday night from then on, whether it was a good band or not, you could find her out at Cain's dancing and praising the name of Jesus.  Making testimony to the power of dancing as a way a body could overcome any weakness of the spirit.

That's how she got over her weakness of men.
