FORK IN THE ROAD, OKLAHOMA

On the edge of Indian Territory somewhere between Dallas and Wichita, a small town sprung up in the late 19th century, smack dab at a place in the road where you had to go either left or right. Unwilling or unable to decide, people stayed on and eventually it was called Fork in the Road.

Not much of note happened until 1907, when there was lots of talk about Oklahoma becoming a proper state of the union. When the town’s folk got wind of it they called a meeting where they declared their town to be a sovereign territory and it was suggested a letter be drafted and sent to the President in Washington D.C.

The folks argued back and forth late into the night about how exactly to word the letter until they called it quits about 11:30 without finishing anything. A few days went by and what with cows to milk, pigs to feed and gossip to tell, the letter was plumb forgot about.

Time went by what with folks talkin’ and fishin’ they decided they could swallow the idea of adding Oklahoma to the town name. Especially with the braggin’ rights they figured would come when their kin folk came to visit and they could lay claim to being bona fide Okies.

CREATING THE WORK

I create these forms starting with the sole of the shoes, and build them from the bottom up. They are hollow and fairly lightweight weighing no more than ten pounds each. Using low-fire earthenware, I incorporate hand-building techniques, coiling and pinching the clay. Including firing and glazing, I  spend approximately 80 hours on each piece. Under-glazes are applied to the work prior to the initial firing. As subsequent layers of under-glazes and stains are applied, the work is fired with each application until I obtain the transparency I'm trying to achieve. The final glaze firing adheres a light coating of clear low-fire glaze giving the finished piece a low gloss surface.
