Being a descendant of Carrie Nation, Enid's lot in life was set long before her first breath when her great grandmother while on her deathbed willed her a soapbox as her dowry. From an early age she was involved in every cause that could be called a cause. She had her first period while in the county jail protesting the Vietnam War on the courthouse steps, her first affair with a woman while on a march with Green Peace to "Save the Whales", and her first broken heart in 1968, when Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were gunned down. She hit her stride during the Reagan years when what some people in Fork In the Road called her "switch hittin' buddies" started dying. Long before Nancy tried to make it cool to say "Just Say No", Enid was telling people to "Just Say Yes" to condoms. The local churches tried to run her out of town but most of the town folk stood up for her and pretty soon the churches went back to doing what they do best; saving lost souls and having bean suppers. Enid likes to say "there's a lot a folks out there, who once you can get 'em past their upbringin' and their schoolin' and their religion might have a chance to turn out to be pretty damned good people. |
