She was the type a girl that they called a ‘humdinger’ round these parts, and even though she was a natural brunette she liked to fancy herself as a Marilyn Monroe look-a-like. One she discovered those do it yourself hair color kits at the Woolworth’s 5 & 10 Cent Store she was like a sow hog in a mud waller. She always said bleach was God’s gift to the poor girls to kinda even up the score a little.

Barely turned fourteen and she up and got hitched to Hurl Bigguns. By eighteen she had three little Bigguns and by twenty, ole cheapskate Hurl had done boot-scooted outta town leaving her to figure it out for herself. Well sir, she had an old fashioned wringer washer and a butter churn that she turned into a mighty profitable enterprise, washing folk’s clothes and makin’ the sweetest butter in the county.

Even what with hard work and kids pullin’ on her she was still a looker. She figured out how to draw A beauty mark on with her eyebrow pencil, roll and crimp her peroxide blonde hair, get her make-up just so and slip into a skirt so tight people would gasp when they caught sight of her.

She loved to take a turn down the sidewalk, glimpse herself in the shop window, lower her eyes, and pout her lips then do her best Norma Jean look. She drove most men crazy and most women berserk when she’d take a spin with their husband on the dance floor, doing the jitterbug stuff and shakin’ the night away with Elvis, Fats and Little Richard.
